Those Who Soar
I wrote recently about how I hope that Heaven will include for me the chance to fly, to see things from the perspective of the majestic birds I watch daily with a wistful eye and sometimes with a catch in my throat.
Last evening while walking with Jinx, a large bird flew across the road in front of me, then swooped high into the locust tree a few yards away. I only got a flash of a look at it, and wondered if it was a peregrine falcon, or perhaps a Cooper’s hawk. I have seen a peregrine twice in the last year in the fields near our home, and hoped I would get another look. The bird was hidden in the leaves, and I didn’t see it when I passed on.
This morning when I arrived at work, the little sparrows and finches that flit about the grassy areas near the parking lot were already busy, and when I walked to the building, a few of them appeared from beneath the shrubbery. I do believe they were watching for the old man who brings them crushed crackers. I spoke to them, returned to my vehicle to get crackers, and gave them a breakfast.
Then when I came inside, I checked email and found an email from my friend LB, who sent me a wonderful profile of a peregrine falcon. The article is here, and I hope you will read it and enjoy as much as I did. Sporting Classics Daily looks like a very nice publication. Thank you so much, LB, for sending this along. The timing was remarkable, after my seeing the peregrine or Cooper’s hawk last night, and then receiving your email today. It’s one of those times when I feel as if Someone is tapping me on the shoulder.
Look up today, friends, and watch for those who soar. What wonders they must see…

It’s all happening, Brian! Now if they’d just deliver on their promise of those flying cars….

Thank you, Annie!
I have to confess that my first reaction to this article was, “Oh, man…” Having lived in Japan, the thought of cars zipping through the air above Tokyo or Osaka, operated by the aggressive and fearless Japanese drivers, makes me shudder.

Yes, bald eagles are something special, aren’t they? We’ve never seen one here in the wild, though Dolly Parton has several in captivity at her park not too far from here. But we have seen several golden eagles, and they are stunning creatures.
Hope all is well with you, Sean. I’ve tried leaving comments at your blog, but for some reason, they never make it past the gate. You’re writing great stuff over there…

Thank you for the kind words. I would have liked to read your comments, I wish I knew what the problem was. A quick search tells me your browser might be blocking 3rd party cookies. You could email to sgoesgpatoutlookdotcom and I could post it but that’s not an elegant solution.
Bald eagles populations are booming so maybe one will cross your path, though I wouldn’t mind seeing some golden eagles up north.

I’ll try again. Let me try using a different browser….

I tried on a private browsing window and it didn’t work for me either. I changed a setting and it went through. Hopefully that takes care of it. I’m glad you said something.

I’m not familiar with Cooper’s hawks but if they are anything like peregrine falcons they must be remarkable. There are no shortage of great bird sightings where I live and I never tire of it. Bald eagles always give me a stir.
