Intact Routine
Yesterday was one of the most perfect days I can remember. When we awoke, a cool front had blown in and it was raining steadily. After feeding the dogs, my wife started breakfast (breakfast burritos from scratch…just one more element in a perfect day) and I took the spotted menace out for a soaking ramble through the hills. The mist was curling like Fafnir’s breath, silver and sinister, reaching into hidden places erupting from black chasms in the slick rock. We padded along, Jinx’s paws making a curious leatherlike sound on the wet leaves. We walked and looked and stopped and gazed and strolled and smiled — yes, Jinx smiles…

The New Holomodor
Friends and family send me videos and podcasts all the time. I watch or listen to very few of them, simply because I’m not interested in most of the topics, or because I can see in advance where the topic is going, and I don’t have time to wade through something that’s not going to provide any genuine insights or epiphanies. I am confronted daily with the international scam known as Covid. I don’t mention it much on this blog because the topic is like evil in the world: it is pervasive and spending too much time thinking or talking about it tends to depress and defile the soul. But…

A light rain was falling this morning when I let Jinx out. I busied myself with my morning routine, and after a while I went to check and see if the spotted menace wanted back inside. I opened the door and took a breath into my lungs, preparing to call his name. That’s when I saw what looked like a short, medium-sized dog trundle across the front yard, just outside of the reach of the porch light. Then it registered. Coon. A big one.
