Nearing The End of April
The days are longer, walking in with soft daybreaks and shuffling out with glowing coral sunsets, and the early, surprising heat has modulated itself back to where it should be, and it would be easy to unwind at least eighteen of the hours of the day outside under the dome of pollen and barnswallows and floating spider webs. I’ll get this out of the way first — I haven’t even tried to work on my memoirs for a while. There are some things, some images and events that are too evocative of too much rawness, and my instincts tell me to sidestep them for a little while until it’s time…

Rest In Peace
Over to the left on my sidebar, you’ll see a link to the Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin, TX. This morning, Mrs. Orr received word that one of the nuns, Sister Mary Regina, has died. If you are so inclined, please say a prayer for the repose of Sister Mary Regina’s immortal soul. Also pray for the remaining nuns at the monastery, who will certainly miss the aged nun’s presence and influence. Requiescat in pace, Sister. ~ S.K. Orr

Chosen: Custody of the Eyes
We recently watched an interesting short documentary, Chosen: Custody of the Eyes. The film traces the discernment and pursuit of a young nun’s vocation as a member of a cloistered community of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. Most striking about the young woman was the sense of deep, quiet joy at the privilege of withdrawing from the world and devoting herself to contemplation and prayer for that same world. Watch any “coming of age” or “trial by fire” documentary these days and you will notice how the film’s subjects will stress the difficulty and challenges of their undertakings, how disconcerting the new environment, and how traumatic the privations or…
