It Comes To This

Time comes when a man realizes, truly and finally, that he will never do any of those things he’s kept in the footlocker of dreams in the back of his life’s closet.

They call themselves the Chicks now, because they’re ashamed of the word “Dixie” and because they’re progressive and they’re on the right side of history. Mind you, they don’t have much of a career anymore, and they’ve never been introspective enough to take the blame for their Maines-inflicted fatal wound, but they were once very enjoyable. And the lyrics to this song are poignant and powerful. And tonight, the lyrics are personal.

UPDATE — I replaced the video with a live version. The video originally posted was creepy and distracting.

I’m sure you’ve heard the joke about the student who wrote an essay about Milton: “Milton got married in 1663 and a few years later wrote Paradise Lost. After his wife died, he wrote Paradise Regained.”

What made me think of this was this sentence from the Wikipedia article on the Chicks’ name change: “In 2020, they dropped ‘Dixie’ from their name, citing negative connotations, and released their first album in 14 years, Gaslighter.”

    How appropriate!

I haven’t followed them in many years, so the “Gaslighter” revelation was very funny, WJT. They certainly seem to have read the “How To Destroy Your Own Career Via Diarrhea of the Mouth” manual.
