New Years Trio

New Years Trio: 3 Haiku

i

Bubbling black-eyed peas
Skillet cradles jade cabbage
A year’s meals begin.

ii

Cardinals perching
Red lanterns hung from branches
Warm flames in iced air.

iii

New pages on nail
Unmarked calendar on wall
Waits for life to write.

Perfect! My sister made the hopping john, rice and collards this year. And for the first year, I liked them! Enough to have two helpings. And my new calendar is hanging on the nail on the linen closet door.

Here’s my New Year’s post, albeit a few days late. My New Year’s ‘resolutions’ are at the end of my meanderings, before the art stuff. Interesting times, my friend! I am mellowing. Or ripening. It’s a good thing, I think.

I really enjoyed your New Years post, Genie. Very insightful and penetrating; your writing style is so harmonious and, well, organic. I hope the new year sees you posting prolifically.

And many thanks for introducing me to the paintings of Clara Peeters. As I mentioned over at your blog, this sort of art makes my heart weep…weep from a sense of distilled joy, and weep from a sense of loss. The “art” we have foisted on us these days is so intentionally ugly and brutal and wretched. One must avert one’s eyes, as one should always do in the presence of something shameful. Clara Peeters was a true master (mistress? Not sure of the correct terminology…) and is one of those soul-balms for which I am so grateful when someone points me to such a body of work.

I also liked your reflections on your own interior life. So perceptive and honest.

I have for years marveled at how screechingly intolerant and hateful the statements of so many “nonjudgmental” people can be. They’re very tolerant and accepting, as long as you agree with every one of their opinions. And they prove the old saying about how people are full vessels. All you have to do is jostle them, and what spills out is what they truly are.

Hope your new year is off to a healthy and wonder-fllled start, Genie.
